Research Area:
Power System Analysis and Energy Storage System
Experience:
Professor Ir. Dr. Lim Yun Seng (BEng (Hons), PhD (UK), CEng, PE(PC), MIET, SMIEEE, MIEM, FAAET), has successfully developed the first utility scale, self-intelligent energy storage system (ESS) of 400kVA and 677kWh on the power grid in Malaysia using patented controllers to reduce maximum power demands for customers and utilities. With the system, utilities like TNB avoid adding new power plants and/or upgrading power networks, resulting in greenhouse emissions reduction and brings down the price of electricity which is essential to a developing country. The system also reduces commercial end-user electricity bills by reducing maximum demand charges. He has also developed another novel ESS that promotes renewable energy sources to mitigate climate change issues. Prof Lim is the founder and director of IoT Energy S/B that designs ESS projects for utilities such as TNB and Sarawak Electricity Board (SEB). Prof Lim has published 62 journal papers, where 15 journals are ranked in the top 5% in Clarivate Analysis and 30 conference papers with 1273 citations at h- index of 20 and 16 in Google Scholar and Scopus, respectively. He obtained RM6.3 million in research funding, consultancy projects with worth of RM65,000 and holds 3 granted patents (Malaysia and China) and 5 pending patents (3 in Malaysia and 2 in Indonesia). Prof Lim has successfully graduated 5 PhD and 14 Master students. He is the lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment Report (IPCC, United Nations) that assesses mitigation and solutions to the threat of climate changes. Prof Lim won 25 international and national awards such as Energy Globe Award 2010, Gold Medal in 2013 ITEX, UTAR Best Invention of the year 2013, National Outstanding Innovator Award in 2017 by Private Education Co-operative of Malaysia and 2018 Top Research Scientist Malaysia by Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
Title: Whole-system techno-economic benefits of energy stroage in future electricity systems
Abstarct:
Through funding received from the government and British Council (AAIBE, CREST and Newton Fund), Prof Lim has successfully built the first working utility-scale grid-integrated Energy Storage System (ESS) at the rating of 400 kW and 780 kWh in Malaysia on UTAR campus (commercial building) under a real operating environment to reduce the daily peak demands with the intermittent power output of renewable energy sources. UTAR saved RM18,500 for electricity bills per year due to the reduction of monthly maximum demand charges. The utility company, TNB, saved about RM 91,000 per year from the deferment of network reinforcement and power plants. In addition, about 16 tonnes of CO2 were avoided per year due to the relatively low maximum demands on power networks. With such ESS, TNB can avoid any increase in electricity price (RM/kWh) for its customers, hence propelling the growth of the national’s economy. This project was carried out in collaboration with Newcastle University (UK) and industries such as Hoppecke and ERS Energy. Four patents (2 Malaysia and 2 Indonesia patents) were generated from this work in addition to 20 journal papers being published and 8 postgraduate students successfully graduated. The technology readiness is at category 6 which is ready now ready for commercialisation. Lim founded a spin-off company, IoT Energy S/B, to design homegrown large-scale energy storage system for utility companies and customers. The awards received for this project include National Outstanding Innovator Award 2017, Top Research Scientist Malaysia 2018 and Gold Award in Pecipta 2019. This project has attracted the attention of the key industries. The managing director of Tenaga Switchgear, Datuk Mohd Hisham Ab. Halim and his team visited the project on 10th Feb 2020. R&D manager of Sarawak Energy Berhad, Dr Ng Sing Muk, and his team visited the project on 7th Jan 2020 with a view to adopt this low cost, highly efficient novel technology in the utility sectors as it is seen as a more economically viable option compared to overseas technology. Under the newly awarded Newton Fund 2020, Prof Lim is collaborating with Newcastle University and a UK enterprise, namely Equiwatt Ltd, to build another novel ESS using second-life batteries for peak reductions. It is anticipated that a large number of second-life batteries could be generated from electric vehicles in the near future. This project is aimed at reducing the total cost of ESS because second-life batteries are relatively cheap while minimising the waste from the electric vehicles. In addition, this ESS will be controlled by an innovative algorithm implemented on the cloud platform that is highly effective in controlling multiple ESS across the power networks involving simultaneous manipulation and analysis of a large amount of data. The outcomes of this project will accelerate the commercialisation and wide installation of ESS across the power networks.

Speech Title: Micro-Synchro-Phasor Measurement Unit: Developments and Trends
Abstract:
The measurement system named Micro-Synchro-Phasor Measurement Unit (µSPMU) can be used to better observe, control and protect the power distribution network integrating renewable energies (smart distribution network), which needs a high-precision power measurements. However, the existing PMU can be used only in transmission grid. The μSPMU can store synchrophasor measurements and communicate real-time data at distribution level of the power grid.
This keynote presents two main points:
1) Development of μPMU with precise time stamping of measurements via GPS to allow the comparison of voltage phase angle δ (i.e., the precise timing of the voltage waveform) at different locations, on hardware side. On the software side, development of a new computational framework to manage large, high-density data streams with nanosecond time stamping and online capabilities that avoids the need for phasor data concentrators.
2) Development of many practical applications using this new type of information provided by μPMU in the distribution network context including the integration of intermittent renewable generation such as distributed control, adaptive protection and cyber-security of the electric grid.
